Name: Scott Kang
Age: 36

Occupation: “Retired.” Actually I owned an after school program for 12 years. I sold it 2 months ago because my wife and I are adopting. We currently have 2 biological children but we’ve always wanted to adopt due to our faith in Jesus. The organization we’re going through required one stay at home parent and so we made the difficult decision for me to sell and stay home until the foster to adopt process was finalized – an average of 2 years. We’re still waiting for a placement. I’m planning on working with children again but in a different capacity – I want to work with children that’s experienced trauma and are in the foster program.

How long have you been Crossfitting and why did you start? I’ve been Crossfitting for 3 years. I started because I’ve lifted weights pretty consistently for 10 years and I couldn’t stand it anymore. It was so utterly boring.

What is your favorite WOD? Anything with wall balls and heavy squats.

If there were one movement you wish the coaches didn’t know, what would it be? That thing when they have you stand and you walk with your hands from your feet to a push up position and then do a pushup and walk your feet to your hands – up and down the gym. In the beginning I used to hate it so much that I would do them as quickly as possible and my hands would make a loud clapping sound so that the coaches noticed. They would tell me I did it wrong because it’s supposed to be a stretch – I would kindly tell them it’s torture. 😛

What’s on your Suck List? When you’re driving on the freeway and you signal to change lanes and the driver in the next lane speeds up so that you can’t. WHY?! Why do people do that?

What’s the strangest talent you have? I’m amazing at pretending to be a snarling ogre and chase my girls around my house. My wife told me to tone it down. Haha.

Describe your biggest milestone, achievement, or “A-ha” moment? That I’m capable of change – I’ve been shy and struggled with it for a long time. But as an adult I’ve decided that it wouldn’t limit or define me.

What can you do now that you thought you’d never be able to do the first time you walked through the gym door? Muscle ups! I thought I’d never in a million years be able to do that!

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit? Have joy. It’s so much fun. It’s like an adult playground – we do handstands and cartwheels and jump rope. And be ready to make friends – there’s so many great and amazing people that work and workout here. Don’t be afraid to push past beyond your comfort zone – you’ll be so pleasantly surprised by what you’re capable of. And lastly, when you shower tell the front office that you’ll be in there!
