Kids these days… ARE FREAKING AWESOME! Seriously, have you seen the Crossfit Kids classes? Well, Crossfit Hollywood’s original Crossfit Kid, Manny Silva, is growing up right before our eyes and is turning into a BEAST! Manny started training with his dad, Jasson, a couple years ago when he was a little scrawny kid, and now he’s posting leaderboard scores and competing in the Crossfit Games Open. It has been a pleasure watching him grow up into such an amazing athlete and person. So, ladies and gentlemen, I give you:

How long have you been a member at CFHW? I’ve been a member for almost two years.

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness? You can take many aspects of training and see how they all feed into each other. Personally, my training originated when I started Crossfit. I was always intimidated with the thought of lifting heavy things and failing and getting injured. Then I began to think, “No one started as an ‘expert’.” I knew i’d be pushed far beyond my comfort zone and even “fail” yet to go on and achieve more on my road to becoming a better me. Therefore, you can say Crossfit promoted my “growth mindset”. Not to sound cliche but the workouts WILL KICK YOUR ASS! Remember, true fitness implies the ability to perform as many tasks as possible efficiently and effectively. I’ve taken this into account not only in life but on the soccer field where apparently size is no longer an issue.

What is your athletic background? I currently play varsity soccer and varsity football at Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies.

Favorite WOD: My favorite WOD would have to be Linda (aka “3 bars of death”). It can’t get any better than deadlifts, bench presses, and cleans.

Favorite Lift: Although my form could use some improvement, my favorite lift is the power clean.

Least Favorite WOD: I hate Karen!

Least Favorite Lift: I have THE lamest overhead squat.

What are your proudest achievements? I’ve become stronger, faster, and more competitive and not only physically. I have also become so much stronger and consistent with my lifts. Long story short… I’m proud to say that i’m just a kid from LA, with the exception that I like to throw heavy things around.

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? One goal? It’s simple. I want to go to the games.

Any advice for someone thinking about trying CrossFit or someone who has just started? Stepping into a Crossfit gym can be overwhelming and intimidating but always remember, you are competing against yourself! Andy Thompson once told me, “There is no try, just do it!” And so I did and pr’d on my snatch (135#) in 13.1. So go for it! It never gets easier but just sucks less. Remember, physically you can only go so far and the rest is all mental.
